Travel is the moving movement of individuals between distant cultural and political locations. Travel can take place by foot, horseback, car, plane, train, bus, boat or other mode, with no luggage, and is one-way or round-trip travel. There are several types of travel: cultural travel, historical travel, commercial travel and sports travel. A variety of other types of travel also exist, such as boat travel, mountain climbing, air travel, road travel, and backpacking.

In order to understand travel, let us first define travel in general. We can divide travel in two broad categories, one based on destination and the other based on purpose. Destination refers to departure from a specific location, while purpose refers to the journey itself. Let us look at each in more detail.

Cultural travel refers to travelling that is guided by cultural heritage. There are various forms of cultural travel, for instance, the art of travelling that allows cultural art enthusiasts to combine travelling and visual culture, or ‘art on tour’ that involves an artist travelling and exhibiting his/her work in different places. Historical travel covers historic tours of major cities or regions, typically with some focus on the region in which the city or region is situated. These can include travelling around Europe, the Middle East, or to different parts of Africa.

Historical travel is a mix of art, culture and historic events that can happen anywhere in the world. It lets us look into the past of a region or country and document its different places, cultures and events. This type of travel is extremely popular with those studying the past. They can document significant events in the lives of people from different places through travel.

Business travel refers to travelling for business, whether it is personal or business related. Business people go to different places for different purposes, such as attending meetings or conferences. They also come back to one place to do their thing. One reason why business people travel is because they need to meet people they work with. Another reason why people travel for business is to expand their business, usually through relocating to another part of the world.

Travel means moving from one place to another, either temporarily or permanently. When you move from one place to another, you call it travel. You can also move permanent, but many prefer not to do so because they want to be able to enjoy the comfort of their current residence before they take up permanent residence somewhere else. Whatever the reason is that you are travelling to another place, it has the potential to be categorized under travel. Even if it is just for a few days, the fact that you have travelled makes you a traveller. Therefore, let us have a closer look into each of the sub-types of travel.
