A designer is someone who designs something before it’s actually produced, usually by sketching or planning the shape or layout of whatever it is that they are making. In practice, any person who creates intangible or tangible objects, products, systems, laws, systems, games, images, services, or concepts can also be called a designer. Usually, when someone is talking about a designer, what they’re talking about is an artist, but in today’s world a designer can be anyone who design anything from software to architecture to clothes. Just because a designer has all the same capabilities as an artist doesn’t mean that they’re always on the same side of the fence, so to speak.
Many times, designers get themselves in hot water for inappropriate uses of their design skills, sometimes because they’ve pushed the boundaries of what is possible in regards to designs, and other times because they have misunderstood the end purpose of what their designs were intended to accomplish. If you feel that you have fallen into this category, please help improve your craft by taking the time to learn how to draw your own designs properly. There is nothing more frustrating than designing a piece of clothing only to realize upon further inspection that the final product doesn’t fit you or is not appropriate for you. It may have been your best design, but if it’s not suited for you, that’s just not good enough.
This is why many designers choose to supplement their income with freelance work. Freelance design work often takes on more freelance work than conventional design work, which means designers can explore more unique areas. In addition, designers who choose to focus on doing just one type of design work can create more meaningful designs that will meet their client’s needs. Unfortunately, some designers choose to work in areas of fashion and only produce clothing that looks great on someone. While this is important work, it’s not really what designers are supposed to be focusing on when creating quality clothing.
The best designers have an interesting blend of talent, skill, and knowledge. They know how to use graphic design tools, but they also understand how to talk to a client and understand different types of clothing. When a designer works in more than one area of the industry, he or she increases the likelihood of finding new things and developing fresh ideas. However, this requires further training, which most designers do not have.
Don’t be afraid to ask your designer for samples of previous work. A designer should not expect you to accept a random design, unless you happen to be lucky enough to have a designer that made a shirt or dress from that company. If you are the kind of person that chooses clothing based on popularity, then you can always request samples of work that other designers have done. Just remember that this is not the only way you can choose a designer; you have other options!
Designer speak often involves industrial design. This type of designer may have experiences in manufacturing, as most designers are educated in production first. However, industrial designers often work with fashion as well, working with brands to create new designs and styles. If your brand’s logo needs a revamp, let your designer know – they’ll likely do a better job!
